Habitat: lowland and upland primary and secondary forests.
Botany
Small evergreen tree; about 12 m tall.
Stem: bark is smooth, dark brown.
Leaves: leathery, glossy-green; stalked; oblong or obovate; 7 to 16 cm long, 4 to 10 cm wide; base is broadly tapering; apex is obtuse or widely acute; underside is greyish, usually smooth, sometimes with stellate brown scales.
Inflorescence: short peduncles; in the axils of the leaves.
Flowers: dangling scarlet; pendulous, 3 to 4 cm long, 2 to 4 cm wide; with several whorls of rounded bracts, many spatulate petals, stamens the same length as the petals and a slightly shorter style.
Fruit: five-chambered capsule.
Seeds: flattened, yellowish-brown.
Pollination: primarily by birds.
