Botany
Small, dioecious tree; 10 metres high
Stem: 60 cm in diameter; bark smooth, whitish; brittle twigs.
Leaves: dark-green; alternate; 5–15 cm long and 3–5 cm wide; finely serrated
Inflorescence: fascicles; straight out from naked twigs.
Flowers: small; yellowish; 3 to 4 mm in diameter; strong, pleasant fragrance; flowering late spring.
Fruit: berries; striking violet; ± spherical; ± 3 mm.
Dispersion: by birds, kererū, tui, geckos.
