Mycology
Type: common, medium-sized; late spring to late autumn.
Cap: dark brick red, bay, red-brown; up to 10 cm in diameter; convex, with a small central boss, later flattens, acquiring a shallow central depression; dry; matt; flesh is white; abundant) milk, mild tastes initially, gradually very hot, acrid.
Stem: red-brown, but paler; becomes hollow with age.
Hymenium: gills slightly decurrent, cream, becoming coloured as the cap later, only paler.
Spore print: creamy white, with a slight salmon tinge.
