Botany: calf-loving; powerful mosses that are silky glossy fresh green to golden or yellowish green when wet. When dry, the leaves lay like a roof tile on the stems and the branches curl upwards. The plants are then more brownish to greyish-green. It is particularly threatened by air pollutants. It inhabits calcareous rocks and walls. However, it is more likely to occur in partially shaded locations. It is widespread throughout Europe. Its area extends to East Asia, in the south to tropical Africa and in the west to parts of North America. It can be found in natural areas as well as in cities and is common almost everywhere in Europe
