Background
Pedilanthus tithymaloides is a perennial succulent spurge (euphorbiaceae). An erect shrub, the plant is now known by the scientific name Euphorbia tithymaloides. However, the genus Pedilanthus has been submerged into the genus Euphorbia, and is more correctly known by its new name Euphorbia tithymaloides. However, for homeopathic identification it will remain Pedilanthus tithymaloides. The common names: Devil’s Backbone. Japanese Lady Slipper, Japanese Poinsettia, Redbird Cactus, Christmas Candle, Jacob’s ladder.
The roots, stems, and leaves of the plant are known to be toxic. These parts of the plant contain euphorbol, a complex terpene, and a known carcinogen. Even minor amounts of the sap of the Euphorbia tithymaloides root can irritate mucosal membranes. When ingested, the irritation of the mucosal membranes of the stomach and intestines will cause nausea and vomiting. Topical application causes skin irritation, inflammation, and even blisters. If introduced topically to the eye, severe pain, and inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva can occur. Ingesting even a few seeds can cause violent and persistent vomiting and extreme diarrhea.
In folk medicine, tea has been brewed from the leaves which has been used to treat asthma, persistent coughing, laryngitis, mouth ulcers, and venereal disease. Tea brewed from the root has been used as an abortifacient. The latex has been used topically to treat calluses, ear ache, insect stings, ringworm, skin cancer, toothache, umbilical hernias, and warts. In the West Indies, a few drops of the latex is added to milk and used as an emetic.
Pedilanthus tithymaloides was evaluated as an incessantly renewable and potential source of hydrocarbons. Extracts were obtained from successive extraction of whole plant material with solvents like petroleum ether, benzene and ethyl acetate. A white amorphous mixture of hydrocarbons was obtained by elution of the column by petroleum ether which was found to be comparable with gasoline.

Proving was conducted February 26, 2016 in Bocas Del Toro, Panama.
The proving is written as it unfolded from C1 through C3.
Master Prover: Jan Scholten.
Pharmacist: Robert Muntz.
Supervisor: Sally Williams.
Provers: Prover 1: Female 33; Prover 2: Female 61; Prover 3: Male 66.
C1
Prover 1: The first thing was calligraphy. Delicate and strong.
Prover 3: It is so unequal, so one sided.
Prover 2: It is very striking. It is the shape of a bird skull.
Prover 3: Bird head.
Prover 2: The color is just delicious. I usually do not like pink, but this is gorgeous. The leaf mimics the bloom tapering to a point.
Prover 1: I would like a lip gloss in that color. I want to take that little blossom and apply it. It is attractive to me.
Prover 2: I am having a feeling of ephemeralness. Time comes and goes really quickly. Beauty and then it is gone.
Prover 1: It makes me happy and I am glad it is in the world. Beautiful and delicate.
Prover 2: It totally looks like a Bird.
Prover 1: Sitting on a branch.
Prover 2: (Starts to talk and chokes.) I am feeling a longing. I see a ship in the 1800’s; 1700’s and I feel like it is Japan. A woman in a kimono and in the dress characteristic at the time. She is waiting and longing. She is waiting for a lover. Wistful feeling. Wistful hopefulness, but a feeling it will not happen. She is waiting for someone and she is yearning and yearning and a fear that a moment has been missed. I have missed the moment and I am not going to get what I desire.
Prover 1: A lover? Her lover got shipped away.
Prover 2: There are ships and she is seeing and yearning and time is short.
Prover 1: A longing, a beautiful love story.
Prover 2: A longing for her lover.
Prover 3: I am a little sad. I see soldiers fighting. Soldiers that fight in the sea and are swimming. They are trained to fight in the water. They are modern. They have explosives and they put them on a ship and they swim away.
Prover 2: The sea, a strong feeling of the sea.
Prover 3: I see them, there are ten or fifteen and they are trained not on the ground, but in the sea.
Prover 2: Frog men??
Prover 3: Maybe, not the diving, but swimming and fighting from the sea. Not so nice. There is aggressiveness, it is so sharp it can penetrate you. Not like a daisy.
Prover 2: Something piercing. It is like a pterodactyl, a sharp beak.
Prover 3: I do not expect good things.
Prover 2: I get the word poisoned.
Prover 1: It is making me happy.
Prover 2: My Japanese lover has a vile of poison on her belt. She has been wronged. She is missing the moment and the poison is for her.
Prover 3: Territory, who owns the ground? Square meters. Who owns it? Ownership and territory.
Prover 1: Is it war?
Prover 3: No actually!.
Prover 2: Possession?
Prover 3: Yes.
Prover 2: This woman could kill another women. Double murder suicide. Kill the woman that betrayed her and kill herself. It is a beautiful killing. Not bloody.
Prover 3: Elegant.
Prover 2: She is totally attractive and alluring and sexy. She has a white kimono with that color (the color of the flower) in the cuffs and down the front. If I cannot have him you cannot either.
Prover 3: This is serious, no space for laughing. Too serious. No enjoyment.
Prover 1: I am happy, out of sorrow grows great strength. This woman is sad and she has to grow from that and get stronger. Maybe she has gotten strength. An inner strength. She can stand up for herself. The loss of a lover. A lover that tried to stuff her in, the strength could be for good or bad. She got away from something. She is stronger.
Prover 2: There is a viciousness. A feeling that since I have lost ……she is consumed by hatred or a lack of compassion. She has turned on this woman and herself. Destructive speech, humiliation of how people have spoken of her. There is a snaky thing. It is very intense. You would not know it because of the beauty and delicacy. You would never guess in a million years she could kill somebody.
Prover 2: This is the end of the line. Her beauty is ephemeral. This is my moment and if I cannot have what I want, it is over. She takes others with her.
Prover 3: It is pointing in one direction. It is not about indecision. There is a mission. A direction, a mission. Not playful. It has a strong, rather aggressive direction.
Prover 1: I am feeling uneasy. A feeling of a femme fatale. The lipstick could be poisonous. I do not want that thing pointing at me (the blossom)! Turn it please! I could get hurt! It was so delicate. It was happy. Now I am on edge and when I am not happy I get teary eyed. Oh shit what is this. I want to touch because of its beauty, it but get it away from me.
Prover 1: I feel wronged but strong.
Prover 2: (Prover starts to shout, screaming and shakes her head violently). I got a strange chill like someone attacked me in the neck! Like a dart went into my neck! It felt neurological like a poison dart. I was attacked from behind!.
Prover 2: The other image I am getting is an old comic book character. A creature that lives in the deep sea. Creature of the black lagoon. I do not like that creature, it is very frightening and it is behind me.
Prover 1: A paralysis thing. From my neck down my arms and it is as if it is going numb.
Prover 2: I am really scared, I do not want my back to the ocean, it is going climb up and get me!.
Prover 3: It can come again! Hahaha.
Prover 1: I do not want to laugh right now. Too uneasy.
Prover 2: I think I can’t let down my guard.
Prover 3: I am getting monks cloistered in a dark wood. Quiet. The monks, they are very gentle and you cannot hear them walk. A good quietness. They are cloistered. They are on a mountain. High up not open, more structured and very clean. Everything is clean, no dust, no things. Everything is at that moment. Nothing forgotten or rotten. Minimal and soft and quiet. Soft is not the right word. Peaceful. They are like soldiers. They know what to do and what they want, but in a peaceful way. They are focused. They have a direction. Also it is small, they must not build it up too high.
Prover 3: The flower, it is a bell. The clapper in the bell. Ding ding ding.
Prover 2: Calling them to prayers.
Prover 1: Overwhelmed, there is a plan. There is a direction a pointed plan. The plan is pointed, but uneasy.
Prover 1: Your story of the monks made me feel better.
Prover 2: The feeling of the monastery helped me feel better. They are in the moment. No past and no future. That is a relief.
Prover 3: For me that woman with the poison and the fighting swimmers are all crazy and they have a goal, a strong, small defined goal. Probably your neck! This one neck must be cut. This one neck in this world must be cut. To me these monks are the same but they do not focus on killing. The woman and the soldiers are killing, focused on killing and these monks have a focus too, but it is to come near to themselves. The one pointedness they use for getting nowhere.
Prover 2: There is a funny thing with time. Ephemeral beauty and the monks have a single focus and time does not matter.
Prover 3: They hold their house clean and it is the only thing they do. Their mind their body.
Prover 1: Feeling better a relief.
Prover 2: It was a dart in my neck.
Prover 3: Shocked! You were shocked and crying and trying to get rid of the dart in her neck.
Prover 1: I am meditating on a bird that has landed in a bush by the sea. He is little and the sea is just sitting there. Just being there. I just want to just watch him sit there. To be free and just sit there. It brings me peace it was a welcomed feeling.
Prover 2: I keep seeing………you know on the west coast of Ireland there is an island, Skellig. You have to take a boat to get there. The monks live in what they call beehive huts. They are beautiful, but they are not clean. It is climbing and climbing and climbing to get as high as possible. The island in the last seen in Star Wars. Like this like the branch with the leaves of this plant.
Prover 2: They are called huts they are very big. The feeling is very peaceful.
Prover 3: I feel very concentrated. Is the first time or second time and without concentrating I know what I am doing. I do not have to ask. I think this bush (the plant we are proving) is not a sleeper. She is awake!.
Prover 2: I think I am thinking very hard to not think about the creature of the black lagoon. Because if I do not focus that fucker will come up behind me and get me!!.
Prover 3: You have to be awake. High alert.
Prover 1: Tingling going through my body. Need to be alert. That bush was free but I cannot stay there too long cause I want to watch my back.
Prover 2: I definitely have to watch my back. It is coming from behind. My heart is beating fast.
Prover 1: Bring the monks back! Let’s climb up to that temple! So gorgeous I do not want to be afraid of it.
Prover 2: It feels there is a Special Forces team sneaking up the hill and they are in black and I know they are coming and I have to be on alert.
Prover 3: It is not a murderer out of craziness…… it is territory. This man or love or land or island is our territory. Someone is on a murder trip because he is fighting for a territory. Possessive.
Prover 2: The woman was possessive. I am feeling heavy in the chest.
Prover 1: Odorless, tasteless dart.
Facilitator: The plant has no smell. I do not have an inclination to taste it. I feel a fairy tale where the queen was jealous about who is the most beautiful and poisons her with an apple.
Prover 1: There is a possession is the goal. My story, this is mine a plan to get that: to possess.
Prover 1: I put this glass down and I have the feeling I am going to fall out of the chair. No vertigo, it was more….like an apoplexy. Severe neurological illness. This falling down was neurological.
Prover 2: A seizure?
Prover 3: A severe illness of the brain.
Prover 2: The branch looks sneaky. You do not know which way it is going to go.
Prover 2: I just want to cry. I feel helpless. I feel helpless that I am not going to be able to stop this attack. I am scared and helpless. How can I protect myself from this incapacitation? It is very frightening. My thinking will be intact, but I will be paralyzed.
Prover 3: Helplessness? Can do nothing?
Prover 2: Very frightening. Like an ALS.
Prover 2: (Heavy sigh.).
Prover 3: (Heavy sigh.).
Prover 2: My chest feels heavy.
Prover 2: I have to hold my head up and I just feel really sad. Like if this is what the future holds I have to take myself out. It is very bleak. Inject something and get it over with. I do not want to be totally incapacitated. Not to move or talk. Unable to breathe, no… no way. I would rather die.
Prover 1: Wow, what helplessness.
Prover 3: I understand what you say. One is attacked by a severe illness.
Prover 2: I am having trouble swallowing.
Prover 3: It is kind of swimming fighters are sitting somewhere and waiting for the sign to attack. Waiting for the next order to come through. Sitting, smoking and doing nothing. Like a severe illness. A stroke!.
Prover 1: Mine is a possession. The taking over of another. Alluring lipstick woman. She has a plan. It is like a death. Someone is going to die. Not her. She is going to murder someone.
Prover 3: Reminds me of scorpion. The nasty side of scorpion. Decidedness and no empathy or remorse. Doing your thing. Decided in the work. Very professional. Hit men, assassins. Danger from a sudden attack.
Prover 2: Danger from an attack and being completely incapacitated. With the inability to swallow.
Prover 3: Falling to the ground being attacked.
Prover 3: If you do not want to possess something it is easier. Even if you are incapacitated. It is not so scary. If you let go it is fine. Like the monks. You do not want so much.
Prover 2: The paralysis is confining. The monks are confined, but free.
Prover 2: Scorpio is very possessive.
Prover 1: The ultimate freedom is death.
Prover 2: Of course the other image of scorpion is an eagle way up in the sky, transcendent.
Prover 2: Hello me…….
Prover 1: The girl you had to have!! Possession!!.
Prover 3: What the blossom reminds me of is high heels. Aggressiveness. If they are high enough. Stilettos. Like a weapon.
Prover 2: Stiletto in a knife.
Prover 3: Part of plan to get something!! The Stilettos.
Prover 2: Predatory. Stealthy.
Prover 3: Lady Slipper.
Prover 1: A slipper is warm and comfy! Not this one!!.
Prover 2: Hard to breathe.
Prover 2: I do not think this is true, but the way it feels is my muscles are frozen. My diaphragm and my abdomen cannot move. Like a descending paralysis.
Prover 3: The theme, you are a killer or the victim.
Prover 2: The Japanese woman was betrayed and she was murderous and suicidal.
Prover 3: It is not only the woman, but also they are so decided to reach something. They want something and they want to kill for it. Take it over. He goes and steps on people to get ahead. You commit suicide, I must have this or die.
Prover 2: I must have this company, this man.
Prover 3: I read in the biography of Salman Rushdie. The split with his wife began after the wedding. He by chance heard that his now wife said to a girlfriend on the phone, I have got him! That was the beginning of the divorce. The day he was married. He is the prey. You directly see the high heels!.
Prover 2: Feeling a lot of pain and stiffness in my right shoulder. Difficult to swallow. Starts in the back of the neck and goes down.
Prover 3: There is fighting. There is death.
Prover 2: Special Forces, navy seals.
Prover 2: A fierce desire or goal at all cost. Possession is grasping.
Prover 1: You deserve it.
Prover 2: I own him.
Prover 3: Now I have him.
Prover 2: Climbing up the ladder.
Prover 2: I have an image of an American white colonial. As many scalps as possible on his belt. Another acquisition. The energy of this is acquisitive. It brings you to the goal.
Facilitator: It is never enough. It is an empty whole. Phase 6.
Prover 1: Acquire until you die.
Facilitator: “Snow White” jealousy. Beauty is also a kind of possession. Jealousy and Envy phase 6.
Prover 1: There is an emptiness in them and they cannot fill it. They need to fill it and so they want more.
Prover 2: They have something that I want.
Prover 1: I deserve it.
Prover 3: Military truck Special Forces are brought to the sea, no beauty, no laughing. Not war… it is about a secret mission. Stealthy. They are not rich sons. Rich sons do not do that. Rich sons are not in the military. But this is an elite force. This is playing a high stakes game on a lethal level.
Prover 3: I never felt in my life that I could not go on. That is really scary. No fulfillment.
Prover 3: The TV show “House of Cards”. He climbs over everyone to get what he wants. They kill for it.
Prover 2: He and his wife had one goal and that was for him to get the presidency. It is relentlessly nasty.
Prover 3: The end justifies the means.
Prover 3: This morning I ask myself why am I so serious?? We had so much fun last night at the party. The whole week was so much fun. I will use many of the things here, they are so clear and there is no reason to be depressed. But I felt depressed and serious first thing this morning.
Prover 2: Oh, my neck hurts.
Prover 1: Fear of someone was behind me. Going to attack me. I have to be alert. Hyper-vigilant. Making sure no one is behind me.
Prover 2: What about poisoning. A neuro-toxic snake. Being bitten by a snake.
Prover 2: Environmentally poisoned. Flint Michigan.
Prover 1: That is a bleak town!.
Prover 3: Maybe a proving like this makes you not get addicted to provings!!!.
Prover 2: Maybe it is a good way to end the week.
Prover 2: Ownership, possess, I have you. There is nothing in me, I cannot profit. The Special Forces are in a town in India and they are waiting and it is boring- there is nothing. Just sitting there and smoking 20 cigarettes.
Prover 1: I am sad now.
Prover 2: This is a big bummer.
Prover 3: It is a downer……so we can go home? This is lousy stuff. Depressed and empty.
Prover 1: I feel empty.
Prover 2: I just got a chill.
Prover 1: I got a chill, a tingle coming down like this (from the top of the head).
