The stiff clematis doesn't climb. It grows to a height of about one metre as a hardy perennial in Central and Southern Europe. The juice has a strong irritating effect on the skin and is internally toxic (causes stomach and intestinal complaints). In the past, the dried herb was given as a medicine against diseases of the male genitalia (when dried, the toxicity is lost).
