Avicenniaceae has been placed contentiously in Verbenaceae, Srophulariales, Lamiales or the monogeneric family Avicenniaceae. In the Apg3 clasification it is placed in Acanthaceae.
In the Plant theory Avicenniaceae is placed in Rubiales, in Phase 4. The proving of Avicennia marina showed strong qualities of balance and equilibrium, Phase 4 qualities. Avicenniaceae is placed in Subphase 1, as a mangrove tree, a water plant. There is similarity with Oleaceae.
