Man, 50, emphysema.
A man comes with emphysema. He has had it for 10 years but the last few years it gives real trouble, making him feel like an old man. He lacks energy and coughs up bloody mucus. It is aggravated by smoking tobacco. He has had 30 tries to stop smoking, succeeding in that for one or two months but then falling back into the habit. The problem is that most people at his work are smoking too. He has been smoking since he was a teenager.
In the past he had frequent bronchitis. He has been coughing his whole life. The cough gives pain in his forehead. It is a barking cough, as from a pack of dogs. It is worse when he goes to sleep, when he closes his eyes. It is worse from deep inspiration and better in the sauna. He suffocates from the cough.
He is a very busy guy, doing 1000 things at the same time. He has a car repair firm together with two companions. One of them, the older one, does not do much, which annoys him. He managed to get him out of the company. Although he is always busy with work and hobbies like walking he is discontented. He asks himself why he is doing all those things, why he does not enjoy life more.
He is the 7th of 8 children, 5 boys and 3 girls. They had a good youth and a loving mother. The siblings are not very close, they do not meet each other frequently but they are present when someone needs the others. Because it was such a big family he had to be active. As the youngest he was not easily heard, so he had to fight for himself with his brothers. It has become his strategy; everyone was scared of his big mouth. He had to do it with his mouth in order to stand up against bigger and older brothers and friends. He says “when one does not bite off, one is a weakling”. A girl friend told him: “You are so afraid of being attacked that you attack first”. He never showed his feelings, also not at home.
He has had many relationships but is never married. They all lasted 4 years at the most, then his feelings for them were gone and he stopped. He never lived together, preferred his freedom. But he did not start fights with them and still has contact with all of them. He does not have children.
