Botany: perennial herbs; roots thick, fleshy; stem usually erect, from a caudex; leaves usually several basal, borne on long petioles, alternate; flowers solitary or borne in cymes; corolla bell-shaped, funnel-shaped, or tubular, five lobes, blue; characteristic nectar disc at the base of the stamens.
