Rosales
Remedy code: 3-644.60.00
Rosales was presented by Jan Scholten during the Plant Families cycle in 2003. Recognizable themes and symptomatology of individual homeopathic remedies from a botanical family are taken as characteristics for the whole group here. Extrapolating characteristic symptoms of a single remedy to the entire group or using symptoms that are common within the group as characteristics for each medicine from that group proves effective. This exponentially increases the understanding of individual medicines, as well as the possibilities for prescribing and healing. Medicines are categorized per plant family based on similar characteristics, as mentioned in the materia medica or additional case studies, according to the Stages presented and used in minerals, according to the periodic system in the book 'Homeopathy and the Elements' by Jan Scholten. Once the themes of a plant family are recognized in the anamnesis and play an important role in the case, one can differentiate within the group of medicines from this family based on the stage, characteristics (keynotes), or a well-fitting rubric from the repertory. The Stage classification as in the syllabus of 2003 is not yet presented as definitive but often fits seamlessly. The stage is characteristic of how someone reacts to the themes or how the themes impose themselves, both in the inner experience and in the circumstances or outer world. Applying the Stage goes beyond just the 'action' as described in Secret Lanthanides. The report of my experiences in this writing is no more than a confirmatory test of the Elements Theory and the subsequent Plant Systematics of Jan Scholten.
Known characteristic themes of the Rosaceae during the presentation: Love, partner, broken heart, romance, idealizing love, expecting the prince on the white horse, giving oneself away in love which can make them feel empty, irritated, and irritable, heart problems manifesting as dizziness, lung-heart and rhythm complaints, excitement, anxiety, sexual problems. Based on this, several cases were resolved, followed by searching within a group of thirty cases for similarities and wording on how to describe the characteristics of this plant group. All themes mentioned can be cause, compensation, or predisposition (practically meaning: manifesting as a preferred circumstance). Successful case studies reveal that Rosaceae fit with themes of love. Situations where something affects you deeply, being involved with heart and soul, or being touched by something. Passion, enthusiasm, being unable to let go. In short, symptoms recognizable as occurring in intense infatuation, but Rosaceae also fit similar situations (cause or fitting compensation). Examples include love for the family, partner love, and parent-child love, which are often projections of each other, or a life occupation one can immerse in, such as a hobby, work, politics, philosophy, religion, etc. Exuberance. Passion. From TCM (traditional Chinese medicine), the pattern of complaints is recognizable as disturbed heart energy, manifesting as mental unrest, sleep problems, and stomach and small intestine problems. Physiologically: complaints of the heart and circulatory system, stomach and duodenum, shoulder girdle, and from there arms and neck (broadly speaking, this is the heart area and its surroundings). Excitement, anxiety, anticipation, turbulent emotions, hysterical laughter, and forms of hysteria can be prominently present. Concurrently can occur: competitive drive, anticipation, the element of competition is important but related to self-worth, being loved experienced as a replacement for getting appreciation, heart palpitations: consciously feeling the heart or palpitations localized in the body (whether or not linked to emotions), rhythm disturbances, blushing or red spots on the face, neck or décolleté (sometimes referred to as nerve spots or excitement – sexual or otherwise), chilblains, cold hands and feet, cold nose or nosebleeds. For connoisseurs, also complaints or symptoms along the course of the heart or stomach meridian. These are well-describable situations and recognizable symptoms, making the Rosaceae a grateful group of medicines. The cause is usually a disturbance in passion or an inability to express it, and because this is a sensitive spot, it will hit harder than the average person.
People for whom a medicine from the Rosaceae family is indicated are usually open, friendly, and especially enthusiastic. They make contact quickly and are interested in a waiting but appreciative manner. Depending on the stage, they can be very cheerful and exuberant, dramatic, or emotionally empty. A pleasant form of interaction that comes across softly due to the absence of roughness. Cautious in interaction, although all emotions can come out quite turbulently (think of the actor Robin Williams in his empathetic roles such as in Awakenings, where he remarkably well portrays Oliver Sacks). Softness in the sense of 'tenderness', or for the more down-to-earth person 'sentimentality', as opposed to the softness typical of the Malvales, where the keyword softness has more to do with touch and a soft structure. Contact is made actively, by fully opening up for attention, although this is not always visibly noticeable. The extent to which 'emotional contact' is made is balanced by a form of slackness, being too open with the associated vulnerability, or being at the mercy of influences and atmospheres, on the one hand, and a kind of 'astringent' quality to keep attention and
transmission limited, on the other hand. They can also give me the impression that they are quite powerless in their emotional life against this 'astringent' barrier without being able to get through it. Maybe the word "Sehnsucht" as used in Romanticism is the best approach. Wanting more in transmitting and expressing feelings than is appropriate or possible in that situation or with that person. Intellectually they try to transcend this limitation, but they have difficulty searching for the right wording and expressing feelings and thoughts. Fantasies are usually euphoric or melodramatic, which is also what they seek in the outside world. In the partner, for example, in life occupation, or circumstances. Experience is a good, if not the best, teacher. Describing the experience and impressions of successful cases is never entirely possible. A good addition to describing the impressions from the cases is comparing them with known experiences from art or nature. Although the interpretation is, of course, very personal, it can help clarify the experience, thereby recognizing Rosaceae. Suitable music is the Adagio from "Romeo and Juliet" by Hector Berlioz (scene d’amour). The atmosphere this music evokes in me corresponds well with the atmosphere carried by people for whom a Rosales is indicated. A suitable film is "Don Juan de Marco." Johnny Depp and Marlon Brando take you through all stages of the Rosales themes as described above. I can wholeheartedly recommend it, both as entertainment and study material. The titles are already fitting enough, based on the meaning as dramatic cultural goods of the stories the music and the film are based on.
Symptoms commonly seen in case studies:
• wanting to be alone or feeling alone (as in Lanthanides, spiders)
• stomach, intestinal, and heart problems both functional and pathological, in combination with idealism (as in Liliaceae)
• emotional vulnerability (as in Thymelaceae, however, these are more self-protective and possibly more balanced personalities as a result)
• pathological passion (as in Tiliaceae, Tilia europea has the same longing, the obstacle is more friendships) • enthusiasm and extroversion (as in Ammoniums and other N- compounds. I have little experience with Cyanates, these have intense emotions within the relationship)
• exuberance, uncontrollable laughter, and even urinating from laughter (as in Nitrogenium oxydatum.)
• mental over activity, often combined with sleep problems (as in Rubiaceae, these have more irritability or slackness in the picture)
• the anticipation of Rosaceae has much to do with low self-esteem and the inability to fully express themselves, not so much with competition. This low self-esteem can starkly contrast with the certainty with which they step forward on subjects they are passionate about, where they can be spontaneous.
• intestinal complaints with prolonged diarrhea, arising from sensitive mucous membranes which can be the basis for allergies.
Case studies.
For the classification of medicines in stages, refer to the syllabus by Jan Scholten (seminar Plants 4, 2003). An overview of Rosaceae in homeopathy can also be found in Clarke's repertory and newer versions of computer programs. Note: later Wonderful Plants was published, followed by Qjure, where you find a more extensive and accurately classified overview of families and characteristics.
The medicine Sorbus domesticus is chosen as an example because it is new and unaddressed in the literature (except for a case by Jan Scholten) just like Pyrus communis and Rubus fructosis. This demonstrates that there are many new possibilities with this case analysis.
Medicine Sorbus Domestica., classified at Stage 4
A forty-year-old man presents with eczema, in the face on the forehead, on the left eyelid which is also thickened, on the left shoulder, and around the anus. He feels very agitated which is related to his wife's emotional moods. “They are bouts, it cuts deep, I try to stay out of the way. I withdraw, try to avoid it, close myself off emotionally”. In general, he can be very enthusiastic such as with home decorating, work, his hobbies, and family. This is where he throws himself into things with incredible enthusiasm, after which, due to problems or limitations, setbacks can also hit tremendously hard. In the past, this has caused an ulcer and burnout, upon which he fled to another job and another house. These symptoms disappeared after the drug Loxoceles Reclusa (described in Clinical Focus, Louis Klein). After this period, he is doing well, but as soon as problems arise, there remains a tendency or need to withdraw and shut down, then as a result of confusion he may shut down emotionally (characteristic of stage 4), and again has stomach complaints. It may be clear that the closing off and the confusion, or lack of overview and decisiveness, reinforce each other and can be
a vicious cycle. The emotional withdrawal confuses the partner and makes her restless and jealous when she sees or thinks he is open to other women. This restlessness then discharges into the emotional moods he suffers so much from.
Analysis
Enthusiasm, violent restlessness, upset stomach, and complaints with or around the anus are all indications of Rosaceae. The trigger for agitation in the mind and on the skin are tensions with the partner, withdrawal is known from Sorbus. Keeping the door closed (locking) but not walking away (the thought of “I'll just go to rooms ”, without any action following this: stage 4).
Prescription: Sorbus domesticus MK, one-time intake.
Follow up
The rash disappears within a week. He feels calm and at home, everything goes naturally, without being bothered by emotions. Closing himself off no longer occurs, which in turn improves the situation at home. After six months, eczema plays up for a few weeks under the left eye, the place where the stomach meridian ends. Because the overall picture is still going well, and the complaint is a very mild form of what occurred the year before, nothing is given, and the complaint later disappears by itself. The following year he is complaint-free and feels fine. He is very enthusiastic and praises his relationship with his wife.
Case Sorbus domesticus II
A forty-two-year-old woman has many intestinal complaints, which are reasonably under control with the help of naturopathy. The complaint consists of a spastic bowel; “it's toasty,” constipation, pain spots that are nagging or burning, and a bloated abdomen. There has been a candida infection since she got married 22 years ago. With daily medication and a strict diet, the symptoms are almost gone, they have been dormant for years though, and sugar in particular exacerbates the symptoms. Other complaints are hay fever in the spring since she was 12 years old, hypoglycemia since puberty, and joint problems since 20 years old.
She calls herself a highly sensitive person and is very sensitive to medications. Ten years ago she fell in love with a female colleague, and this caused her severe confusion, she did not know what to do and according to her, she lost herself. At this she collapsed and suffered from depression, these are still lurking: “I struggle with it”. For some time she attended therapy, “from then on I started looking around me, what am I doing, what do I want, went on a journey of discovery”. The intestinal symptoms arose in her childhood when her father was in danger of dying, “it felt like I was dying myself.” After responding well to Sorbus, she explains that there has been a fear in her for a long time, near the heart area, which slowly lessened after Sorbus. Her father had a heart attack when she was eight years old, since then she has been afraid because she saw his fear. As a child ever since, she was obsessed with the idea of being able to stop her own heart, and it took a lot of effort not to think about it. Her father was home from her early years because of esophageal varices and diabetes; the situation was critical for many years. She felt very connected to her father; he was also always present at home. Today she works in healthcare and does volunteer work. She needs a lot of sleep, dreams about ghosts, and in one particular dream her third child is possessed. She is also the third child, according to Grandgeorge's observation, which always seems to be true in my practice, this patient would have the predisposition from the father's side, something with heart and blood vessels. The dream may mean that her future - in my experience, the youngest child in a dream often symbolizes the future - is still dominated by obsession. This may be about the heart, after all, this is born of the magical consciousness that prevailed in childhood.
Analysis
Problems since childhood and allergies may indicate a Composite, but she is very independent for that. The combination of colitis, joint problems, and hay fever, with the search for self-development, may indicate a Lanthanide, but her docility is again against that, as is the lack of both reflection (the “helicopter view”) as well as the lack of consciously dealing with the theme of “the shadow. The doubt, about the crisis in her life arose after confusion regarding the theme of a love relationship. After this, she started to investigate, look around and doubt fits stages 3-4-5. At an early stage, she did not know what to do with her feelings (fitting stage 4) and concealed everything from her colleague and her partner (which is known as Sorbus domesticus). The relationship with her father is also one that concerns her. Parent-child love falls within the Rosaceae theme in my experience. Given the improvement that Sorbus gave on the gut, it is likely that a stage 4 disposition developed from childhood. A possible causa has been the health of her father, about which there has also been much doubt and uncertainty (Stage 4), which she was already aware of at an age
when a child still feels inseparable from the parents (Rosaceae theme). The occurrence of heart disease in the family, obsession with the heart, tension around and on the heart, allergies, and digestive problems from the small intestine are features associated with Rosacea.
Prescription: Sorbus domesticus MK, one dose.
Follow up
After the drug Sorbus domesticus all the old symptoms returned briefly, the stomach, allergy, and feeling “lousy”. Already a week after taking it, she could eat everything again, a unique event for her. The extensive naturopathic medication was stopped. Finally, slight joint pain at the thumb mouse remained. The taciturn or reserved nature, possibly associated with stage 4, remained. After six months, she was still complaint-free and treatment was discontinued. Two years later, everything is still going well.
Geum Urbanum, is classified as Stage 2.
A man in his 50s comes in with complaints of the stomach and intestines. A heavy feeling after eating, undigested stools that are always soft despite the diet he has been on for years, to which he faithfully adheres and feels dependent. He also suffers from cold hands and feet, and for years has had chest pressure on exertion. He fears it is his heart, as with his father. Speaking in public and to strangers causes a lot of tension, redheads, and palpitations. “I feel embarrassed when they look at me, I start sweating when they look at my fingers” (which is inherent in his work). This tension can make him hot-tempered, but he tries to keep it inside. “With everything I hesitate: shall I do it or not. I feel inferior to people who have studied, even with my wife and her family”. Despite his shyness, he is an enthusiastic man, open, friendly, and passionate about his faith about which he does talk and discuss with everyone. His youth was dominated by passion, this period also gave rise to his complaints. He talks about this without restraint, in a quiet contemplative way, with mixed feelings, both guilt and also afterglow, which confuses him because of his faith and strong morality. Above all, he shows himself to be a grateful person for all the beauty in his life.
Analysis
The combination of chest pressure, fear of the heart, heart problems in the family, food allergy, cold hands and feet, blushing, and passion along with restlessness, is a reason to think of the Rosaceae. Uncertain and shy (compare Barium), feeling watched (compare Calcium), caution with hot-temperedness (compare Magnesium), and sensitivity to criticism (compare Strontium), all fit Stage 2. Geum rivale is known for gastrointestinal complaints (read Clarke). The literature does not distinguish between Geum urbanum and Geum rivale. Prescription Geum urbanum MK, once.
Follow up, Intestinal symptoms that have existed for years snapped up within a week. The stools are good, but he cannot remember. Chest pressure and tightness are over at the same time, sleep is better and he can now urinate properly again (this complaint had been going on for years, but due to habituation he had not named it before), he reflected a lot and looked back on his life very conscientiously (compare Spiraea). This increased more and more and months later gave him very much agitation, which disappeared only after Squilla maritima from the Liliales group. Remarkably often, after a good reaction to a Rosacea, I see a Liliacea appearance after some time.
Geum urbanum II
A 45-year-old woman suffers from tension and sleep problems, severe back pain, hot flashes, chilblains, and frequent nosebleeds. The tensions arise from problems with her partner who is chronically ill. He is very moody and depressed, the children are on drugs which causes a lot of worry. She is not sure how to deal with it. She is plagued by doubts because she wants to get away from her husband but does not want to abandon him because of his illness. Her husband quarrels with the children from his previous marriage; she doesn't want to be in the middle of it. She broods a lot, wakes up early, and suffers from hot flashes a lot.
Analysis
Weighing up, cautiousness, and giving help and support to the partner which is like a maelstrom or bottomless pit, are characteristics I saw before in people who responded well to Geum. Rosaceae characteristics: problem with a partner, mental turmoil, winter toes, nosebleeds. Stage 2: doubt, uncertainty, confusion, conforming, difficulty arguing (like Magnesiums).
Prescription: Geum urbanum MK, once-daily intake.
Follow-up
All symptoms disappeared the next month, she has become calmer, no longer uses tranquilizers, and can cope more laconically. It is still exciting and “waiting for the blow,” because of the unchanged home situation. There are many worries, emotions cannot be expressed and the situation hardens. On this situation and new complaints, after six months Sedum-acre is prescribed (Stage 2, Saxifragales) after which things go well for a long time. Two years later a divorce follows, which she can deal with reasonably laconically and with inner peace. As a new love affair develops, the hot flashes return. She remains a person who scans, always wondering if what she does and says is right and looks for support. Causa or current stress load is another relationship. Geum-urbanum is repeated. Despite all the worries and entanglements, things have been going well for another two years.
Rubus fructosis, classified at stage 13
A forty-five-year-old immigrant woman feels unhappy. The complaints she comes with are irritability, feeling impatient, being disappointed, a lot of anger, and arguments with her husband. She reacts very agitated, she wants to be alone, and this is all worse for menses. To relax and disconnect from her misery she uses a lot of alcoholic beverages. When she is tipsy she feels freer, sometimes even happy, and also has more energy. Raising children is a full job, and because of this she misses the feeling of being free, “I am like a bird with clipped wings.” Precisely because of alcohol, she has many problems with her husband who resents her for this. However, the arguments with discussions about what and how decisions should be made come to nothing, she then gives up and reaches for the bottle. This gives the feeling of being stuck in the relationship, because of the children she is not free to leave. At the time when the problems started to play out, she felt depressed and suffered a lot of homesickness for her motherland. With the depressive feeling, old memories surfaced that had long been repressed. As a teenager, she fell in love with an older man; this was sexual; it was a big secret. “It was wrong, but I loved him intensely, it broke me. I have never loved anyone like that since my innocence is gone. Her heart broke because they moved after her parents died. The goodbye was so terrible, “she died of crying in bed. For years she thought back on this, later she went traveling and forgot her past. She has always been independent, she hates that she is now dependent on her husband to take care of the children and the house. In part, she is very confident, with some things the opposite. Dreams these days are a lot about relationships, conflict situations that can never be resolved properly, and sad dreams. In childhood, there were many dreams about falling into the water, flying, and being chased without being able to escape. Father was a heart patient, mother died of cancer.
Analysis
The reason for seeking help was the relationship problem (Rosaceae). Unable to move forward, stuck in it (Rubus), and withdrawing (Stage 13) into alcohol (Rubus?).
In the past, there was a secret and impossible relationship (Rosaceae), not being able to move forward with it (Stage 13). Broken, losing, and dying of grief fits more at Stage 15, but the action is and was withdrawing Stage 13, repressing the pain and memories, giving up the struggle of coping or accepting, she does not fully get to that Stage13, really giving up fits at Stage 14. The confrontation she withdraws from with her partner is analogous to dealing with the struggles of Stage 13. She calls herself an open and loving person, impulsive and spontaneous, doesn't understand much about Dutch reserve, being a flamboyant (Rosacea) rebel that she is inside. Likes to listen to old music (Stage 13), and her emotional problems are amplified because she emigrated with the consequence of homesickness (Stage 13) to marry (Rosaceae).
Prescription: Rubus fructosis MK, one-time intake.
Follow up
After taking the drug, alcohol consumption decreased to almost nothing within a month. The menstrual cycle gets shorter, something changes with hormones, she is still agitated but can name it instead of going all in. She has chosen to be happy, not get stuck in bitterness. This results in picking up her old profession, hobby, and spiritual interests. She gets more overview, “things are coming together.” Her energy increases. After confrontations, she remains easily hurt, but can now talk about it with her husband and remain social without withdrawing. Years later during major problems with parenting, the themes from her childhood return as reflections, and she responds very well to Anagallis arvensis. In this case, the cause, being the broken heart due to missing father and secret love, was responded to in a way that fits Stage 13, a reaction and compensation that seem to represent the Rosaceae theme. For years she has fused with this and even sought a situation to match; homesickness, abandonment, withdrawal from the problem, nostalgia entailing. Rubus,
however, puts her back on track. In the parenting problems, the Primulaceae theme as it played out in her childhood seems to return. This brings up a theme that has to do with personal development as it originated in childhood (before the Rosacea theme came into play) and in this case is colored by insurmountable circumstances, situations, and emotions.
Tormentilla tomentosa, classified in stage 3.
A seventeen-year-old girl complains of sensitive intestines, causing fluctuating symptoms with a lot of pain and diarrhea, accompanied by headaches and ENT complaints that always last a long time. Additionally, she is always so tired that she has hardly been able to go to school for a year. Her appearance is giggly, nervous, and fidgety; her build is tall, thin, and fragile. She completely hides behind makeup and jewelry. She appears vulnerable and twisted, her voice sounds like that of a little girl, and she behaves very naively, almost like an imitation of an insignificant personality from a cartoon. She gives superficial answers as if she has no idea about many answers. She wants to become a photo model and loves attention. Lately, she has been dizzy upon standing, sometimes to the point of seeing black. Several times a day, she feels palpitations in her chest, neck, and abdomen. Her parents describe her as exuberant and generally cheerful, but her mood can turn into bursts of anger. Much anger and tension manifest in obsessive-compulsive behaviors, including a lot of organizing and cleaning. She eats extremely little. Since childhood, she has had cold hands, feet, and nose. In recent years, she has blushed easily, especially when she is nervous in front of groups of people, such as at school. The symptoms started three years ago, after repeated rapes on dates arranged via online contacts. She has had a lot of therapy since then, but she is still very unstable. Remarkably, her attitude towards relationships has changed since then: she constantly seeks new boyfriends and initiates contact by flirting and approaching people on the street, but after the initial approach, she does not know what to do with it. She makes many tentative and noncommittal appointments and is very fickle in this. She continues to seek and explore relationships. She distances herself from the trauma itself and the associated feelings.
Analysis
Confusion about relationships, or about entering into a relationship is a problem that has emerged in previous Tormentilla case studies and has been used as a characteristic. Confusion about the relationship with a partner, family members, or friends fits the Rosacea theme and corresponds to Stage 3. The confusion I associate with Tormentilla relates to a prior relationship or projections of other contacts and circumstances onto a potential new relationship. The symptom picture includes many Rosaceae characteristics (dizziness, palpitations, cold hands, feet, and nose, blushing, and exuberance). Tormentilla tomentosa, as an astringent, is an excellent intestinal and haemostatic remedy in phytotherapy. Tormentilla anserina acts on the stomach and pylorus as a herb and has more of a sedative effect than confusion in the homeopathic picture, but also seems to belong to Stage 3. As a herb, it has much less astringent and more spasmolytic action, which could symbolically or energetically represent the soft and compliant nature of an Anserina indication). Convalaria gave no result. Prescription Tormentilla tomentosa MK, single dose.
Follow up
Within a month, things are going well. The child is calmer, no longer aggressive, relaxed, happier, and not tired, the palpitations are gone, and for the first time since her toddler years, her cold nose is gone (the nose has an important signaling function for heart energy in TCM). Her intestines are fine, and she is eating a lot, which hasn't happened in a long time. The headaches are still there, but she is going to school again instead of calling in sick. Gradually, over the coming months, her fixation on boyfriends decreases but remains remarkably strong, with a new boyfriend every few months. Over the next year, she becomes more reserved and assertive towards men and pushy boys and becomes more confidential with her girlfriends.

Postscript
Using themes and Stages in the described way, an effective remedy can be found. Experience with a remedy accelerates recognizing the image or themes, which helps identify the Plant Family, and knowledge from the materia medica can confirm the choice. It is important to keep in mind that the anamnesis aims to define the main thread of the story: what is currently causing the most tension for this person, and what is disrupting the harmony in this person. From this data, a corresponding plant theme can be sought. Using this method, the overall symptom picture is not used. The repertory can provide differentiation or hints, especially if the stage is not yet clear or known. The published Stage classification has so far proven to fit new case studies excellently. Applying it provides more insight, more possibilities, and more confidence in prescribing. Besides that, this insight opens an additional dimension metaphysically, at the very least evoking amazement
and wonder, giving homeopathy the ability to work more effectively and refined. On behalf of the patients, I thank the pioneers who made this possible and continue to develop these insights. Published in Dynamis 2009.
