Region: south America, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela; C. America - Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico.
Habitat: tropical and subtropical; moist or wet forest, open pine forest, sometimes in thickets, pastures, or second growth; elevations from 900 - 1,450 metres.
Content: xanthonoids; bark has yellow-brown resin.
Use: wood for timber, fuel.

Botany
Tropical shrub or small tree; 7 to 14 metres tall.
Stem: heartwood reddish to dark brown; sapwood pinkish brown, greyish cast; wood is medium to fairly coarse textured, moderately light to medium in weight, fibrous, brittle, easy to work, takes a fairly lustrous or lustrous finish, moderately durable.
