Habitat: Laubholzborke near waters; rarely on damp soil; sensitive to air pollution, missing near cities; higher altitudes.

Botany:
Moss; easily recognizable by a clear, fringed sheet ground with a magnifying glass; grows in small pomp boxes.
Leaves: very strong curly leaves when dry.
Capsules: dark green; gradually compressed at mouth, in a deflated condition capsule-shaped leaves and leaves very friable in a dry state.
