Robert F. Thorne was a botanist who lived from 1920 to 2015. He published his classification in 1968, with several revisions over many years till 2007.
The Bioinformatics Working Group Center for the Study of Digital Libraries at Texas A&M University lists the March 1999 version and other classification systems. James Reveal's course lectured on the Thorne system, with an extensive listing of synonyms, both nomenclatural and taxonomic, for each name in the system.
Thorne has set out his reasons for abandoning the ending -florae for -anae, following contemporary practice.
