Region: southern Europe, Switzerland, Italy, east to Ukraine, Turkey, Greece; West Asia, Caucasus, Israel, Jordan.
Habitat: dry stony slopes, mainly in the middle zone of mountains; very cold-hardy plant; prefers moist, but well-drained, fairly fertile soil in a sunny position; very drought tolerant.
Content: alkaloids, tannins, cyanogenic compounds, flavanoids; alkaloids, sedine, sedamine.
Ecology: often specially targeted by slugs; immune to the predations of rabbits.
Use: in green roof and green wall systems; food, edible leaves and young blooming stems; ornamental, in varieties.
Botany
Herb; annual to biennial, sometimes perennial; to 80 cm tall.
Root: short roots, little developed.
Stems: usually branching from the base; 5 to 10, to 20 cm tall.
Flowers: white to pink; blooming June to August.
