Differential diagnosis
Grass can be recognized because:
- the leaves are not on stems
- the leaves are long and narrow
- the leaves are flat, gutterformed or round and hollow blade like
- flowers are small and insignificant (onaanzienlijk)
Grasses should be discerned from:
- Liliaceae: have the same kind of leaves but bigger and more noticeable flowers
- Alliaceae: smell like onions
- Equisetums
- Waterplants where only the flowers come above the water surface (sea grass, sea weed fonteinkruid).
As long as they don’t blossom grasses cannot be determinated because they look alike.
Determination of different grasses is done by looking at the knobs, the flowers, the tongues, the form of the stem, the chaff, the leaves
