Phytolacca americana

Case 4.2: a woman with throat complaints.

It concerns a woman, age 32. The initial interview took place in June 1996.

Reason for consultation: for seven months she has been sick, it started 4 months after labor. She always has
flue-like complaints with throat pain and a swollen tongue. Once she had an imminent earinfection. Restless sleep. She feels depressed.
Working has almost been impossible since the complaints.
According to the E.N.T.-doctor she has a chronic sinusitis and she isallergic for dust and cats. She has had antibiotics once because of an angina tonsillaris.
She frequently has throat pain. She is hoarse. Sometimes she has painful gums, feeling like barn paper. She has swollen lymphnodes in the neck. Tonsillectomy at age 4.
Angina with fever, first day 38.7 degrees Celsius. Throat pain, swallowing aggravates, cold drinks amel. Once pneumonia.

If she has influenza she has a hot head and a cold body. No perspiration. The influenza is accompanied by myalgia, mostly in buttocks and thighs.

Social
She normally works 3 days a week as a system manager.

Pregnancy/labor
During the pregnancy she did a course next to her the work.
During the pregnancy she had numerous complaints: blood loss, tinnitus, pain in the coccyx. Tingling fingers. She then had an aversion to mussels and meat.

Her labor was 8 days early and exhausting for her. The child had to be fetched by vacuumextraction. The first weeks after the birth of the child she felt alert and excited, full of adrenalin. She even had sleeping problems.

During four months she gave breastfeeding, some times with imminent mastitis.

Mind
She feels guilty when she is ill, because she then negelects her duty as a mother. She feels very responsible for her child.

She feels uncertain concerning her body, has no faith her body.
For her the combination of work and taking care of her child is exhausting.
She also feels guilty towards her employer.

Dream: a girlfriend is pregnant, the child was born with one arm. The child was not welcome.

Menses
Cycle: she uses oral contraceptives. In the week before menses she has head pain, stomachpain and nausea (warm room agg.).

Menses: lasts 4 days, much pain. Regular (with OAC).
Sometimes violent ovulation pain.

Temperature
Temperature: she can be warm or chilly, depending on of the surroundings. No perspiration.

Medical history: swollen lymphnode in axilla with fibroadenoma in lef breast.

Analysis:
