Cattle represent a domesticated animal species raised by humans in an artificial environment with the aim of harvesting agricultural products of animal origin. Farmed animals form an extensive group of domesticated animals raised by humans. Cattle are the most important livestock farmed in Slovakia. They are raised for meat, milk, and leather. By estimate, there are around 1.3 billion cows living on the planet.
Another situation is observed in India. In India, the cow is perceived as a sacred animal which must not be harmed. It represents abundance, purity, and holiness. In a religious sense, it is considered to be a “pure” revered animal. The tradition of venerating cows and the ban on the slaughter of cows are based on the “Vedic religion, which forbids the consumption of cow meat. Cows in India may even block traffic.
It makes one think about the great differences between various nations. In Europe, cows are raised for a sole purpose. They have no freedom and are kept in stalls, awaiting slaughter. In another country, the very same animal is perceived as sacred and inviolable. At the same time, it is free. While a cow in India is young and productive, she is owned, and as someone’s property, she is serving a purpose. However, once she grows old, and is no more useful, she becomes completely dependent on her owner. The owner grants her freedom and lets her stroll along the streets. These cows are thus old homeless retirees, left to their own devices.
