Region: New Zealand's North Island, Marlborough Sounds.
Habitat: low elevation and valley forests.
Use: great source for honey; wood for timber, handsomely figured for interior work; not durable in exposed situations.

Botany
Evergreen tree; to 30 m tall; a slender crown.
Leaves: alternate, leathery, narrow oblong; 10 to 15 cm long, 2.5 - 3.5 cm wide; without stipules.
Flowers: 2 to 3.5 cm long; bright red; borne in racemes 10 cm long.
Fruit: dry woody follicles.
