2.7.13 Stage 13, Holmium: the fight with Iros
The beggar Arnaios, also called Iros, is the habitual beggar of the palace and the suitors, asking for food and being the bringer of messages between the suitors. Iros envies Odysseus, the new beggar, so Iros challenges him to a fight, which he tries to avoid. Antinous likes the quarrel and proposes a real fight. Odysseus agrees provided the suitors will refrain from interfering. The suitors agree to that. Odysseus punches Iros and drags him by the leg outside.
Penelope appears and tells the suitors that she has to marry in a short time. The suitors are enchanted by her beauty. But she says the suitors have brought no gifts for her and are only consuming the palace's food supplies. Then the suitors depart to get some presents.
The fight with Iros is in a way the fight with the suitors. But Odysseus cannot do that yet, so has the fight with only a part of his opponents, Iros. The partial aspect is typical for Stage 13.
