Hama is the Greek for ‘together with’, mela is a word for ‘fruit’ (Fruit and flowers born at the same time). Hamamelis is a shrub growing in all parts of U. S. in damp woods or along streams. The american Hamamelis blossoms in autumn, the flowers are yellow, the seeds ripen the year following. The leaves drop in autumn and the yellow flowers appear in late september, october followed by black nuts. The seeds are ejected violently (snapping Hazel). The leaves contain tannic and gallic acid. The bark much tannin. The Hamamelis species originating from Asia blossom in winter.
