GINKGO BILOBA
Japanese walnut tree (max. 30 m)
This irregular cone-shaped tree has one, but sometimes several trunks. Leathery leaves, 12 times 10 cm, notched, fan-shaped with radiating veins. Long shoots with widely spaced leaves and the track-shaped short shoots with leaf rosettes. Male and female flowers on separate trees; male as thick, upright catkins, female solitary or in pairs on long stems. Fleshy egg-shaped fruits 2.5 to 3 cm long, ripe specimens yellowish. Belongs to China but is probably extinct in the wild. Often planted as an ornamental tree in Europe.
