Fumaria officinalis.
Scientific: Fumaria officinalis, Fumaria media, Fumaria sturmii
English: Earth Smoke, Fumitory, Wax Dolls (Kent:from their doll-like appearance).
Dutch: rookkruid
German: Echter Erdrauch
The name is derived from the Latin fumus, smoke, because of the smoky odor of some species. Another explanation is the old belief that the plant could also have come into existence from vapour or smoke that has come out of the ground. Historically the plant was burned and it was believed that the smoke was a purifying agent. Ancient exorcists thought that the smoke had the power to expel evil spirits. Magicians and witches believed that they became invisible when they stood in the smoke. In Germany, it was thrown in the fire to prevent thunderstorms.
The genus Fumaria is very similar to Corydalis, with many European representatives. Fumaria is a weed with compound leaves with oblong-oval segments which are usually glaucous. The small pink, whitish or reddish-purple flowers are borne in dense clus- ters. Farmers consider the plant as an indicator for good rich soil.
From old times Fumaria is known for its purifying power (Dioscorides, Chaucer, Cullen). Sometimes the dried leaves are smoked in the manner of tobacco, for disorders of the head.
