Botany: underwater living mosses, freshwater; grows mostly in slowly flowing, more rarely in stagnant waters. It is mostly found in clean, nutrient-poor (oligotrophic) streams and larger lakes and was formerly used as a medicinal plant (Fons = source, antipyretica = against fever). It is found in a water depth of up to 18 meters. The common swelling moss is a variable and diverse species that can grow up to 30 cm long. Underwater it forms dark-green flooding lawns.
