Botany: habitat forested areas up to an elevation of 2800 m; non-photosynthetic, no chlorophyll, mycoheterotroph; stems yellow to brown, bulbous at the base; leaves lacking; flowers from August through October, reddish-purple with a white lip with small purple spots; some are cleistogamous with non-opening flowers.
