Region: south America. Colombia; Central America, Panama to Nicaragua.
Habitat: edges of dry woodlands, secondary growth formations, grassland; prefers sunny position, dry rocky hillsides, also black clay soils; tolerant of waterlogged soils, drought; open ground, shading out grass.
Use: wood; restoring native woodland, woodland gardens; live fencing.

Botany
Tree; 10 - 20 metres tall; pioneer species; dioecious and wind-pollinated.
Pollination: by social bees, wind.
Dispersion: by wind.
