Asparagus officinalis

Asparagus officinalis.
Name: Asparagus officinalis. Abbreviation: Aspar. English: Asparagus German: Spargel
French: Asperge
Dutch: Tuin asperge
Source: Vermeulen, Chemisch ecologische flora
Stage: 16
Asparagus is an ancient name, said to be derived from the greek ‘A’ = intensive, and sparasso, to tear, alluding to the prickles of some species.
The plant contains a lot of vitamin B, saponins, asparagine (an organic sulphur compound that gives urine its characteristic odour), potassium salts and traces of fluorine. Asparagine owes its name to the fact that the substance was first discovered in asparagus. However, asparagine, an amino acid, also occurs in other plants, such as hollyhock [Althaea], liquorice, black salsify and seedlings of leguminous plants.
The odour of the urine is caused by 5 or 6 volatile sulphursubstances like: methaanthiol and dimethylsulfide. Oxydes like dimethylsulfoxide and dimethylsulfon are respomsible for the ‘sweet’ aroma. The intensity of the odour is a genetic predisposition.
Asparagus root is mainly a salt-expelling diuretic
It is said that a person who eats a lot of asparagus also has a lot of lovers; a clean association can be attributed to the phallus-like form of the sprouts.
