Region: western tropical Africa, Nigeria, Cameroon.
Habitat: understorey tree in high rainforests.
Content: alkaloids, palmatine, coloumbamine, jatrorrhizine.
Use: traditional medicine; wood fro timber, fibre; inner bark to colour cotton and other fibres; fibrous bark for matting, caps, sides, partitions and doors of huts; wood for house building, furniture, general carpentry.
Botany
Ornamental tree with; dense foliage; spreading crown; 12 to 30 metres tall.
Stem: long, clear; 40 - 70 cm in diameter; bark is intensely bitter; wood yellow, turning brown upon exposure; eartwood and sapwood are not differentiated, fairly fine-grained, rather soft, easily split, good polish.
