Name: from the Greek ampelos, "vine", and desmos, "bond", from its former use as a string to tie up grapevines.
Genus: 2 species; in its own tribe Ampelodesmeae, subfamily Pooideae.
Region: Mediterranean.
Use: ornamental. In its native area it is used as a fiber for making mats, brooms, and twine.
Botany: large clumping perennial bunchgrass; nodding flower panicles ± 50 cm long.
