Protonema absent. Rhizoids absent. Acrocarpous. Complex shoot system of rhizomatous axes, erect leafy shoots. Perforated water-conducting cells. Dioicous. Antheridia 1-2 in leaves axils of (3-)4-lobed leaves. Archegonia solitary and scattered (1-4/shoot).
Sporophyte: rarely encountered, only in Takakia ceratophylla; stomata on Sporophyte absent; seta persistent.
Capsule:: twisted, dehisce along single slit; calyptra present; asexual reproduction by deciduous leaves or shoots.
