Zoology: stony, colonial corals; budding is always intracalicular, within the whorl of tentacles; corallites are phaceloid or subplocoid, with one to three centres being linked; coenosteum when present with a distinctive double wall; columella is discontinuous, spongy; septa are porous, with unique, multi-directional teeth formed of twisted threads.
