Region: North Africa, Greece, Middle East, Pakistan.
Botany: rare and striking, tuberous, herb; root a large rounded tuber; leaves attractive, pinnate; flowers hermaphrodite.
Habitat: rocky, montane slopes; cultivated fields; summers are dry, winters under snow; well in sandy well-drained soil in full sun; hot dry conditions.
Use: leaves and root are edible.
