Botany: leaves pointed, oval, with a water repellent surface; inflorescence has an extremely small, almost indistinguishable sheath surrounding the spadix, sheath withers away leaving only the spadix; flowering in spring.
Use: Native Americans ate the seeds and rhizome after drying and grinding them into a starchy substance.
