SEQUIOA SEMPERVIVENS
California sequioa (max. 112 m)
Known as the tallest tree in the world: this evergreen conifer has a high trunk, covered with a very soft, thick and fibrous bark, reddish in color. The lower branches are at an angle downwards. The needles on the head and cone-bearing shoots are 6 mm long, scaly and placed in spirals; those on the paired side locks are 6 to 20 mm long, flattened, pointed and bent. The egg-shaped cones are 1.8 to 2.5 times 1.2 cm. Each of the 15 to 20 cone scales has a dented centre. Belongs to the west coast of North America and is mainly planted as an ornamental tree in Western Europe.
