Taxonomy: close to Pinellia and Typhonium.
Botany: flowers on an erect central spadix rising from a spathe; unusual trait is the sex change, typically male when small, and female or hermaphraditic when large, capable of changing sex based on nutrition and genetics, several times during its long life of 20 years or more.
