Zoology
Bubo lives in the area of New world, North America except polar places, and in most of the places in South America. It is also very good adapted for cold weather.
It lives in the trees – broadleves, evergreens, mixed forests, tropical forests, prairies, pampas, subarctic tundra, deserts, rocky beaches, and in the cities.
It is 46-68 cm height, its wings ranges from 101 to 153 cm and weight 1400g. Females are bigger than males. They have very good sense of hearing which helps them to find the capture more accurately.
Nourishment is very diverse – rats, mouses, bats, birds, insects, amphibians, reptiles, fish. Its claws are very strong, so it is able to catch very big capture – like big dog, blue heron, hares, etc.
Most of them live alone, youngsters usually travel until they find their partners. Later on, they settle down and built their own nests. They protect their nest very strongly, with aggression.
Bubo colonizes its territory permanently. Female lays 2-3 eggs and when it has a lot of food, it can lay also 6 eggs. Both of the parents sit on the eggs for 35 days. They make sound of 4 syllabus voice ho-ho-hoo-hoo and youngsters produce sizzling sounds.
They usually avoid to have contact with people. They are in the red list of endangered species IUCH 2016.
In the mythology – symbol of knowledge and spirituality, also symbol of night, death. In Africa – symbol of death, misfortune and illness. In hinduist, bubo is connected with Lakshmee, for native Canadians it represents a symbol of the highest spirituality and protection.
