Botany: rhizomatous hermaphroditic, perennial grass; up to 75 cm high; rhizome scaly; stem base scaly; leaves threadlike, stiff, tough, up to 50 cm long; inflorescence of few long-haired spikelets each ± 4 cm long, wrapped in a lance-shaped bract called a spatheole.
